SPECIAL POST: In the footsteps of Dorothy in Lund, Sweden

Special Post written by my parents Jim and Pam

Pam’s mother Dorothy Swanson studied physiotherapy (now called physical therapy or PT) at Lund University between 1938 and 1939. At the time, there were no PT programs in the US. She returned to Michigan after graduating and practiced PT at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Lund is a half-hour train ride from Malmo, Sweden where Pam, Jim, and Nick stayed. Pam and Jim took a half day to explore the university, while Nick explored Copenhagen. Malmo is one of the oldest cities in Scandinavia, founded in 1666.

The University of Lund reminded them of Oxford. The beautiful campus blends into the city. Pam and Jim had studied Dorothy’s photo album describing her time there and tried to find her classroom buildings and dorm.

With the students’ help, Pam and Jim found found Dorothy’s dorm, now a church. Pam is standing in front of the dorm, and below is Dorothy’s photos to compare and contrast.

The campus abounds in beautiful buildings. Like this one.

Lund’s 12th century cathedral was particularly grand. Inside, a 15th century astronomical clock keeping tabs on the time, phases of the moon, an astronomical calendar, Catholic saints days, and other means of keeping time.

Pam and Jim were glad to have made the trip to Lund. It was fun imagining Dorothy there.
